Kenya: Students to undergo pregnancy tests

Kenyan female students will now have to undergo pregnancy tests at least once a term if the new guideline launched by the Public Health and Education Ministers - Beth Mugo and Prof Sam Ongeri - are implemented. The Guideline was launched amid rising number of pregnancy related school dropouts. The test is supposed to be voluntary, the guideline said.

  2. I am sorry but this doesnt make sense at all. At least for now the test is voluntary i hope they dont make it compulsory,as Ms. Laruni will say thats violation of their pregnancy right. I think the real issue here is the "dropout rates" this is what they should be focusing on not just pregnancy test, to me that doesnt solve the issue at hand.

  4. I agree with you ladies as well. The drop out rate will be higher for those that are pregnant because its a matter of being able to support the child, and most parents would pull their kids out of school for the sake of the baby and the mother. Providing a pregnancy test for girls in school is fine, BUT it's like giving out condoms to promote safe sex, thats is encouraging them to have sex in the first place. Why should we encourage kids to be sexually active at such a young age? I'm not quite sure the point of these tests. But I am against it.

  5. This approach is totally misplaced. Nip the problem in the bud. Subject the girls to compulsory reproductive health class then work from there instead of waiting for the problem to occur then take measures which are not quite beneficial.
