My voice does not match my face
My voice does not match - my face
My voice does not match my lips my eyes
My nose or my cries
My voice does not match my face
My voice does not match my chin, my roots
My eyebrows or my boots
My voice does not match my face
My history my background
Infringed by my sound
History burned and buried
Hidden and not carried
My voice does not match my face
My flesh my ears
My smile and my fears
My fingers and feet,
Produce they’re own beat
Can I help it if my sound
Has yet to be unwound?
Must I be like you?
Feeling wronged and untrue
Must I hide like a child?
Or stand tall with pride
My strengths my flaws
My bruises my falls
How many times do I have to tell you that
My voice does not match my face
My tears, my call
My stride stands tall
My hair, my clothes
The motherland’s woes
May not match my voice, or my description
May not be your choice, or your prescription
I may seem small or weak, to you?
But I cannot be anything other than true
My birthplace
My heart
Cannot be torn apart
Just because my voice does not match my face
